HC Deb 21 January 1943 vol 386 c311W
Mr. Hewlett

asked the Minister of Labour whether dustmen are in a reserved occupation; and whether this work could be done by older men who could be released from the regiments in which they are now serving?

Mr. Bevin

Dustmen are not in a reserved occupation and deferment of calling up will only have been granted to men in this occupation in exceptional circumstances. Since, in general, this is work which can be done by men over military age or by women, there is no reason why men should be released from the Services for its performance.
