§ Mr. Viantasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many men and how many women have responded to the appeal made by His Majesty's Government in August last to British subjects in the United States of America who were not engaged in vitally important work there to return home and help the war effort?
§ Mr. LawFour hundred and ninety-three volunteers (252 men and 241 women) have been accepted under the scheme which was put into operation in August last and have reached this country for service in His Majesty's Forces or for civilian war work. In addition, 42 men and 56 women have been accepted but have not yet reached this country, and a number of other applications are under consideration. It is not possible to give the exact number of British subjects in the United States who have responded to the appeal, but the numbers of applications have been considerably more than the acceptances, since, as indicated in my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Bournemouth (Sir L. Lyle) on 6th October, a large number of volunteers could not, for a variety of reasons, be accepted.
