HC Deb 03 February 1943 vol 386 c912W
Mr. Oldfield

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of registered women 18 to 45 years of age; the number of those married or widowed with dependent children; the number of such children under five years of age; the number married or widowed without dependent children; the number of each category in full-time employment when registered; and the number of married women who are working part-time in industry and in other employment?

Mr. Bevin

The total number of women of these ages who have registered is 8,670,000. The number married or widowed with children of their own under 14 years of age living with them is 3,450,000, which includes 510,000 who were in full-time paid employment when they registered. The number married or widowed without children of their own under 14 years of age living with them is 2,250,000, of which number 970,000 were already in full-time paid employment when they registered. Separate figures regarding women with dependent children under five years of age are not available. Precise figures of the number of married women who are working part-time are not available, but it is probably of the order of 450,000.
