HC Deb 07 December 1943 vol 395 c786W
Mr. Leslie

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that private contractors for food supplies to the Army in certain Indian stations charge exorbitant prices; and will steps be taken to have N.A.A.F.I. canteens established throughout the Indian camps?

Mr. Amery

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to foodstuffs sold in canteens. As I indicated in my reply on 9th November to the hon. Member for Caerphilly (Mr. Ness Edwards) the policy of the Government of India is to provide canteen facilities to the utmost extent possible and to fix reasonable prices. Canteens in India are run by the Indian Canteens Department under the supervision of the Defence Department of the Government of India: to establish N.A.A.F.I. side by side with that Department would involve complications in administration.
