§ Sir W. Smithersasked the Minister of Agriculture why, as the land from which six dairy heifers were removed to buildings until 31st March was tile-drained in 1940 for the purpose of wintering young dairy stock, the Order L4 was made by the Essex War Agricultural Executive Committee on 5th February, 1943, to preserve this grassland for summer grazing?
Mr. HudsonThe six cattle concerned were very young and were at pasture in January last in a field which was tile drained in 1940. The weather was extremely wet, the cattle were in poor condition, and the grass was being damaged. An Order was served to house the cattle so that they might be fed properly and dung could be provided to maintain the fertility of the holding, and with a view to preserving grassland for grazing later in the season.
