§ Mr. Harveyasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any directions have been given to the Commission which is allocating the land in Northern Rhodesia, purchased from the North Charterland Company, to ensure that an adequate proportion of the land is reserved for African natives; whether any recommendations have yet been made by the Commission as to the proportion of land to be reserved for Africans; and what is the extent of the land which is now to be allocated?
§ Mr. Harold MacmillanThe answer to the first part of the Question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, the Commissioners began their work on 15th August, and my Noble Friend is not aware whether they have submitted their report to the Governor. Approximately 3,800,000 acres, mainly for native occupation, were purchased by the Government from the North Charterland Company.
