HC Deb 10 September 1942 vol 383 cc328-9W
Sir R. Gower

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many members of the British Embassy staff, including members of the British Military Mission in Chungking, can speak Chinese?

Mr. Eden

According to my information, eleven members of the staff of His Majesty's Embassy at Chungking have a knowledge of the Chinese language. This figure relates to the administrative staff only and includes members of the staff of the Military Attaché but not of the British Military Mission. The latter does not form part of the diplomatic mission at Chungking but is under the control of the Secretary of State for War. It would not be in the public interest to give the statistics desired so far as the Military Mission is concerned.
