HC Deb 08 September 1942 vol 383 c53W
Sir E. Graham-Little

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether, inasmuch as milk is recognised as the best source of calcium in the diet and the supply of milk has progressively increased since the outbreak of war, he will reconsider the decision to add chalk to the national bread?

Mr. Mabane

My Noble Friend is not prepared to reconsider his decision to make some addition of calcium to the national flour. While the overall consumption of milk which is the most desirable source of calcium, has increased since the outbreak of war, the intake of calcium per head of the population prior to the war was abnormally low. I would refer my hon. Friend to the report by the Medical Research Council, published in the medical Press in May, 1941.
