Mr. W. Joseph Stewart

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Planning whether an officer has now been appointed to deal with the question of the collection of scrap metal from collieries and other industrial undertakings in the county of Durham, and the amount of scrap collection up to date?

Mr. Hicks

Yes, Sir. An officer has now been appointed to deal particularly with the collection of scrap metal in the Durham and Northumberland coalfield. During the last 12 months over 45,000 tons of metal have been collected in the County of Durham by my Department in addition to the ordinary scrap collected through the trade.
