HC Deb 15 October 1942 vol 383 c1774W
Captain Crowds

asked the Minister of Labour the proportion of skilled and unskilled men, respectively, of the total of 71,308 who were wholly unemployed on 17th August last; and, in view of the appeals for man-power, the nature of the difficulties which face the employment of these men on war work?

Mr. Bevin

Among the total of 71,308 there were 15,615 boys under 18, including many who had just left school and have since found work. Of the balance of 55,693, more than half were registered for work in labouring occupations and the great bulk of these were registered for light work only. Generally it may be said that few remain on the register for more than a short time except those with some physical or other disability.
