HC Deb 14 October 1942 vol 383 cc1655-6W
Mr. Thorne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will withdraw all the silver pieces and have more bronze ones minted?

Sir K. Wood

In present conditions the comparative cost of the metals used is of less importance than the urgent need of the metals in bronze coinage for war purposes. The change would involve labour difficulties and some inconvenience to the public. For these reasons I am afraid that my hon. Friend's suggestion is not practicable.
