HC Deb 13 October 1942 vol 383 c1510W
Captain Elliston

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether he is aware that competent authorities have advised that the present shortage of coal output could be overcome if the mining day of all pit workers was prolonged by one hour's overtime; and whether he has discussed with the representatives of the miners the adoption of this suggestion during the coming period of grave national danger?

Major Lloyd George

The suggestion contained in the Question has been discussed from time to time with both sides of the industry: their advice has been that the extension of the working day is in a number of pits impracticable and that in general the interests of production would not be served by its adoption.
