HC Deb 07 October 1942 vol 383 c1233W
Mr. Riley

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies the present approximate amount of unemployment in the West Indian Colonies of Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbabos, British Honduras and British Guiana, respectively; and what steps are being taken to meet the prospect of considerable unemployment consequent on the completion of the construction of the American naval bases in the West Indies?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

I am unable to give the precise numbers of unemployed persons in the West Indian Colonies mentioned, particularly since so much is of an intermittent nature. My Noble Friend has been in continual touch with the Governors and many measures have already been taken or are in preparation to deal with this problem. He is now asking for an up-to-date and comprehensive review, which I hope shortly will be available.
