HC Deb 07 October 1942 vol 383 cc1237-8W
Petty Officer Herbert

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many Britons have returned to this country from the United States of America since the announcement of special facilities was made?

Mr. Eden

Out of about 200 volunteers who have, I understand, been accepted under the new scheme, 12 have so far reached this country. As my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State explained in his reply yesterday to my hon. Friend the Member for Bournemouth (Sir L. Lyle), the operation of the United States Conscription Act, which is designed to make full use of all man-power in the United States of America for the prosecution of the war, inevitably reduces the number of those who are free to volunteer for service in this country.
