HC Deb 19 November 1942 vol 385 cc521-2W
Mr. David Adams

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that the captured German General von Thoma, who received a friendly welcome to General Montgomery's quarters, was responsible for the atrocity of Guernica; and whether, as such well-publicised incidents may weaken public belief in the Allied intention to punish Nazi criminals, he will forbid such in future?

Mr. Attlee

I am not aware that General von Thoma was responsible for the bombing of Guernica. In reply to the second part of the Question the Government have very clearly and repeatedly stated their intentions as regards the punishment of war criminals.
