HC Deb 17 November 1942 vol 385 cc220-1W
Colonel Carver

asked the Minister of Supply whether he is aware that Mr. Winter, of Knedlington, near Howden, who farms 15 acres of arable land, has had his holding requisitioned for the adjoining flax factory, without compensation; and, as this will take his means of living away and other more suitable land is adjacent, will he see justice done and not dispossess this smallholder?

Mr. Peat

The land referred to has been requisitioned and compensation is pay- able under Section 2 of the Compensation (Defence) Act, 1939. Careful consideration was given to the selection of the site. All the fields adjacent to the factory were examined and it was found that no other suitably situated land was available. An offer of employment in the flax factory has been made to, and accepted by, Mr. Winter.
