HC Deb 17 November 1942 vol 385 c215W
Mr. Groves

asked the Minister of Health whether he has considered the proposal, made to him by the Medical Practitioners' Union, that there should be a National Ambulance Service somewhat analogous to the National Fire Service; and, as its adoption would tend to efficiency, particularly during an emergency, what decision has been reached on the matter?

Mr. E. Brown

A reply to the Union's proposal was sent on 6th October, explaining that the consideration of ambulance services is one of the matters included in the surveys of hospitals which are now being made in connection with the Government's post-war policy. During the war the needs are met by the large expansion of the peace-time ambulance service represented by the Civil Defence ambulances, the inter-hospital ambulances used under the Emergency Hospital Scheme, and the American Ambulance in Great Britain, all of which are coordinated on a regional basis.
