HC Deb 10 November 1942 vol 383 cc2297-8W
Mr. Lipson

asked the President of the Board of Education, in view of his recommendation to local education authorities to release schoolchildren to help with the Christmas mail, what will be the number of hours of work per day, the rate of pay and the period for which schoolchildren will be required?

Mr. Butler

I am sending my hon. Friend a copy of Administrative Memorandum No. 418 which deals with the hours of work, the rates of pay and the period of employment of schoolchildren volunteering to help with the Christmas mail. I understand that the Post Office have indicated in a confidential circular to local post officials the maximum rates of pay, which vary according to the type of area and. the age and sex of the children. The Post Office have also emphasised to local officials the importance of giving children at least one free day a week during their period of employment.
