§ Major Lyonsasked the Minister of Suply whether, in view of the need for metals and to reduce labour on nonessential work, he will take steps to acquire for war purposes all unnecessary affixed brass and other metal plates; and whether he will give early notice to owners, and to those who will be responsible for collection?
§ Mr. PeatThe Ministry of Supply is now organising a special appeal for non-ferrous metals, including unwanted household brass and copper. I am glad of this opportunity to emphasise the importance of the public responding to this drive by handing over to the local collectors all brass, copper and other non-ferrous articles such as, for example, brass plates no longer essential.
Mr. W. Joseph Stewartasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Planning whether an officer 194W has been appointed to deal with the question of the collection of scrap metal from collieries and other industrial undertakings in the county of Durham; and how much metal has been collected up to date?
§ Mr. HicksThe appointment of an officer to deal particularly with the collection of scrap metal in the Durham and Northumberland coalfield is under consideration. During the last nine months over 33,000 tons of metal have been collected in the County of Durham by my Department in addition to the ordinary scrap collected through the trade.
