HC Deb 12 February 1942 vol 377 cc1589-90W
Mr. David Adams

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that able-bodied male Civil Defence telephonists at report centres are paid the sum of £3 10s. weekly, with meals value 1s. six days per week, together with sleeping quarters; and whether, with a view to better utilisation of their services, he will arrange for this work to be done by women?

Mr. H. Morrison

I should deprecate the employment of able-bodied men who are capable of more strenuous duties solely as telephonists in any Civil Defence report and control centre and such is not the usual practice. If my hon. Friend has specific instances in mind and will send me particulars, I will have inquiries made.
