§ Sir H. Morris-Jonesasked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that in many rural areas in Herts and Essex village air-raid precautions wardens receive no pay; that many of them have been on practically whole-time work during the last six months with constant night duty, and have incurred out-of-pocket expenses; and whether he will see that undue advantage is not taken of the willingness of these patriotic men?
782W
§ Mr. H. MorrisonI am aware that in these areas the majority of the A.R.P. personnel are unpaid volunteers and that during the last six months many of them have performed long spells of night duty. Their public spirit is, I feel sure, generally recognised and appreciated, and there is no wish to take advantage of it; and local authorities are authorised to refund the actual out-of-pocket expenses incurred by such volunteers in connection with the performance of duty.
