§ Mr. Sorensenasked the Home Secretary the number of interned refugees whose release has been authorised in Canada and Australia, respectively; the number who have applied for release; and the number who have returned to this country?
§ Mr. H. MorrisonApart from volunteers for the Pioneer Corps and men whose releases have been authorised to be effected as soon as they can complete their arrangements for emigration to other countries, I had up to the 26th July given authority for 308 persons to be returned to the United Kingdom for release from Canada and 173 from Australia, if they were willing to undertake the voyage. No statistics are available of the number of applications for release made by or on behalf of internees. 891 persons have been brought back from Canada, of whom 579 have already been released and 196 are on their way from Australia.
