Mr. De la Bèreasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the prohibition of greeting cards, under the Paper Order No. 36, will deprive the Treasury of revenue from Purchase Tax amounting to £600 for every ton of paper used in manufacture; and what steps he proposes to take in view of this loss of revenue?
§ Sir K. WoodYes, Sir. I am aware that the prohibition to which my hon. Friend refers may affect the Purchase Tax revenue from this form of stationery. The primary consideration, however, is the need for conserving supplies of paper; the effect on the revenue is comparatively small and does not call for special action.
