HC Deb 21 March 1940 vol 358 cc2137-8W
Mr. David Adams

asked the Home Secretary the number of burning pit-heaps in County Durham which have now been effectively dealt with, and the number remaining for treatment; and whether measures are in operation for the prevention of similar accumulations in future?

Sir J. Anderson

Of the 61 pit-heaps in the county of Durham, 27 were originally classified as burning continuously and 17 as liable to flame from time to time. As a result of treatment there are now none in the first category and only 11 in the second. Remedial measures are being continued. As regard the last part of the Question, this is a matter for my hon. Friend the Secretary for Mines.
