Mr. Creech Jonesasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether consideration has been given to the improvement of conditions of the railway em- 264W ployés in Nigeria and the payment of wages weekly instead of monthly; and whether the railway provident fund will be extended to the shopmen and the principle of industrial arbitration extended to disputes?
Mr. M. MacDonaldI have received representations on these matters, which are under consideration by the Governor of Nigeria, whose final recommendations I am awaiting. The importance of establishing conciliation machinery has been impressed on all Colonial Governments, and I am asking the Governor of Nigeria whether the enactment of legislation with this object is contemplated.
