HC Deb 06 August 1940 vol 363 c46W
Sir R. Clarry

asked the Minister of Labour whether his attention has been drawn to the recommendations contained in the Sixth and Seventh Reports of the Select Committee on National Expenditure upon the undesirable effect of unnecessary and non-productive overtime; and what steps he is taking to deal with the problem?

Mr. Assheton

My right hon. Friend is aware of the recommendations referred to and has been giving the matter urgent consideration. The Select Committee themselves refer to the urgent necessity of abnormal production during recent weeks. The need for full production persists and can only be achieved by such organisation of working hours as will give the workers adequate intervals of rest. My right hon. Friend has had a leaflet prepared containing suggestions for the guidance of employers and workers on this subject and intends to issue it immediately.
