HC Deb 09 November 1939 vol 353 cc434-5W
Mr. G. Macdonald

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he will state the number of schools in the course of construction in Lancashire; whether it is intended to postpone the completion of any, if so, how many; and to what extent the building of new schools has been deferred, giving separate figures for secondary schools?

Mr. Lindsay

While the Board have yet to obtain and consider a statement from the education authority of the Administrative County of Lancashire of their reasons in each case for wishing to proceed with the building of new schools, or extensions of existing schools, I understand that, as regards projects on which building work has already begun, the authority are likely to desire to proceed with 21 elementary school projects and six secondary school projects, while postponing completion of the work on one elementary school, one secondary school and two technical schools.

As regards projects on which building work has not yet commenced, I understand that the authority are likely to propose to defer 56 out of 62 elementary school proposals and also eight secondary school and six technical school projects.
