§ Lieut.-Colonel Windsor-Cliveasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether, in view of the cancellation of the Civil Service examination in September, 1939, he will, when making temporary appointments to the Civil Service, give special consideration to the claims of those candidates who had the requisite educational qualifications, including the schools certificate, for attending that examination, and had paid the necessary fee?
§ Captain CrookshankAs I informed the right hon. Member for Edinburgh, East (Mr. Pethick-Lawrence) on 3rd October, clerical vacancies in Government Departments, which cannot be supplied by the loan of staff from other Departments are being filled on a temporary basis through the employment department of the Ministry of Labour and National Service. I am afraid that it would not be practicable to prescribe that special preference should be given to persons who had declared their intention of entering the clerical class open competition in September last. I may add that the fees paid in respect of that examination have been returned.
