HC Deb 21 March 1939 vol 345 c1129W
Sir W. Jenkins

asked the Secretary for Mines what is the average paid per ton of coal raised as royalties in South Wales; what is the lowest and highest paid per ton; what is the amount paid in way-leaves; and what is the amount paid in rents and what it amounts per ton?

Captain Crookshank

The only recent information available is the average cost per ton of saleable coal raised, of royalties, rents and way leaves (including the rental value of freehold minerals where worked by the proprietor); the figure for South Wales and Monmouthshire during the 12 months ended January, 1939, was 8¼d.

As regards the highest and lowest rates, information was specially collected for the Royal Commission on the Coal Industry (1925), and was published in Table 17 of Appendix No. 18 of the third volume of their report.
