HC Deb 14 March 1939 vol 345 cc235-6W
Colonel Burton

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that, at the prices asked by British shipbuilders, it would be wholly uneconomic to build the ships which the Lamport and Holt line wanted in Great Britain, and are therefore being pressed to place these orders in foreign yards; and what steps are being taken, or are contemplated, by the Government to remedy these conditions?

Mr. Stanley

I have seen a report in the Press to the effect of the statements in the question. As the House is aware, the whole position of the shipping and shipbuilding industries is receiving the urgent consideration of the Government; and a statement will be made as soon as possible.
