asked the Minister of Labour (I) whether he will state approximately the amount paid in benefit and allowances in Wales and Monmouthshire during each of the last 10 years;

The following table shows the approximate amounts of unemployment benefit, transitional payments and unemployment allowances paid direct through Employment Exchanges situated in Wales and Monmouthshire during each of the 10 years from 1929 to 1938, and also the approximate amounts of the contributions by employers and employed persons to the Unemployment Fund from Wales and Monmouthshire in the same periods.

The following table shows, for the principal industries in Wales and Monmouthshire, (a) the estimated numbers of insured persons, aged 16–64, at July, 1927, and July, 1938, (b) the numbers of insured persons of these ages recorded as unemployed at June, 1927, and June, 1938, and (c) the differences between (a) and (b).

NOTES.

(1)For 1927, when persons over 65 years of age were insurable, estimates have been made of the numbers aged 16–64.

(2)Juveniles under the age of 16 who first became insurable against unemployment in September, 1934, and agricultural workers who first became insurable in May, 1936, together with the classes of domestic workers who became insurable in April, 1938, are excluded from the figures for 1938. Persons insured under the Special Schemes for the banking and insurance industries, for whom a geographical analysis is not available, are also excluded.

(3)The numbers of insured persons unemployed in June, 1938, were ascertained on the basis of the revised procedure for counting the unemploped, introduced in September, 1937, under which persons subsequently found to be in employment at the date of the count are excluded from the figures.
