asked the Minister of Health whether he will state the total amount of contributions paid into the National Health and Contributory Pensions Scheme during the last accounting year by employers, employed persons and the Exchequer, respectively?

The total amount of the contributions paid into the National Health Insurance scheme for Great Britain for the year ended 31st December, 1938, was approximately £36,565,000 made up as follows:

Contributions by employers, £15,073,000.

Contributions by employed persons, £14,786,000.

Contributions by the Exchequer, £6,706,000.

The total amount of the contributions paid into the Contributory Pensions scheme for the year ended 31st March, 1939, was approximately £81,700,000 made up as follows:

Contributions by employers, £15,900,000.

Contributions by employed persons, £16,600,000.

Contributions by the Exchequer (inclusive of the cost of over-70 pensions payable by virtue of the Contributory Pensions Acts), £49,200,000.
