§ Sir G. Jonesasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the unprecedented profits now being made by some of the big chain stores and multiple shops, and the fact that such profits are to a substantial extent due to the increased purchasing power of the public owing to the rearmament expenditure, he will consider the desirability of forthwith calling upon such businesses to make some special contribution to the urgent financial needs of the country?
§ Sir J. Simon:The concerns to which my hon. Friend refers are liable to the same taxation on their profits as other businesses and I see no reason for singling them out for any special taxation.
