§ Sir H. Morris-Jonesasked the First Lord of the Admiralty why the rates of pay and allowances, including dependants' allowances, for a second lieutenant in the Royal Marines are less than those for the corresponding rank in the Army; and whether he is aware that the pay of 6s. 10d. per day, allowing for the minimum expenditure by an officer, makes it impossible to hold this commission without a private income; and whether this matter will be reconsidered?
§ Mr. ChurchillThe pay of Royal Marine officers is based on that of Royal Naval officers according to age, service and relative rank. The emoluments of a junior Royal Marine officer on the permanent list are not comparable with those of a junior officer in the Army; the former is given a commission and pay immediately on entry, whereas the latter joins as a cadet. I cannot agree that the rate of pay given to probationary sub-lieutenants necessitates a private income.
