HC Deb 20 April 1939 vol 346 cc531-2W
Mr. McGovern

asked the Minister of Labour whether his attention has been called to the strike of painters in Glasgow Corporation housing direct labour service; whether he can state the number of men on strike and the number who are still working; whether the men who are working are members of the Painters' Union; what are the reasons for the dis-

ment voluntarily without just cause, any question on this matter being for decision by the statutory authorities. As regards the last part of the question, a sample test showed that of 2,851 Irish migrants who took out unemployment books in April, 1937, 14 per cent. qualified for benefit in the first year of residence in this country. A similar test relating to January, 1938, showed a corresponding figure of between 17 per cent. and 18 per cent.
