HC Deb 21 February 1938 vol 332 c39W
Mr. Adamson

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department what is the lowest price offered by the authorities of the Soviet Union per barrel of herring, graded or otherwise?

Mr. R. S. Hudson

So far as I am aware, the lowest price offered in recent years by the Soviet authorities to United Kingdom herring exporters is 24s. per barrel.

Mr. Adamson

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department (1) whether he can give the date on which the Soviet authorities removed restrictions on the inspection of herring at Leningrad;

(2) whether the Soviet Union have reintroduced any restrictions with regard to the inspection of herring arriving at any port in Russia; and, if so, on what date the, restrictions were re-imposed?

Mr. R. S. Hudson

So far as I am aware, there are no definite regulations imposed by the Government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in regard to the inspection, of herring at Russian ports. I understand, however, that until the end of last year contracts entered into between United Kingdom sellers and the Soviet Authorities provided for inspection in the United Kingdom, but I am informed that in respect of a recent contract concluded between the British Herring Trade Association and the Soviet Authorities inspection at Murmansk formed part of the contract.
