HC Deb 14 April 1938 vol 334 c1342W
Mr. Joel

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether his attention has been called to the increase in juvenile crime, as disclosed in the latest statistics; and whether he will call a conference of the education authorities to consider how this development can be remedied so far as the schools are concerned?

Mr. Lindsay

As I stated in my reply to a question by the hon. Member for Moss Side (Mr. W. R. Duckworth) on 7th April the great importance of moral training is fully appreciated by the Board, the local education authorities and the teaching profession. In these circumstances, my Noble Friend is of opinion that the cause of the increase in juvenile crime is not attributable to any lack of proper instruction in the schools. He does not therefore think that a conference such as my hon. Friend suggests would be likely to serve a useful purpose.
