HC Deb 14 April 1938 vol 334 cc1347-8W
Mr. Kelly

asked the Postmaster-General whether the position of the Post Office telegraphists working the cables to the Continent affected by the cable and wireless agreement has been discussed by the Government; and, if so, what decision has been reached?

Mr. McEntee

asked the Postmaster-General whether all employés in the Continental section of the cable office are civil servants; and whether, under the agreement with Cable and Wireless, Limited, their position will in any way be affected?

Mr. Walkden

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware of the anxiety of the Continental telegraphist staff employed by the Post Office regarding their future employment under the new cable and wireless agreement; and whether he can now make a statement on this aspect of the matter?

Major Tryon

The employés in the Continental section of the Central Telegraph Office of the General Post Office are civil servants, but the staff of Cable and Wireless, Limited, are not civil servants. The position of the Post Office staff will not be affected by the arrangements with Cable and Wireless, Limited, to which the hon. Members refer.
