HC Deb 11 April 1938 vol 334 c767W
Mr. A. Edwards

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that many blast furnaces are being damped down in this country and men being thrown out of work; and whether he has any explanation to offer?

Mr Stanley

I am aware that a certain number of blast furnaces have gone out of operation and that there has been some increase in unemployment. The hon. Member will appreciate that the demand for pig iron is at present somewhat below the very high level attained last year.
