*The procedure for counting the unemployed was revised in September, 1937. Under the revised procedure persons subsequently found to be in employment at the date of the count are excluded from the figures.

The figures are exclusive of persons insured under the Agricultural Scheme.

The estimated numbers of insured persons are based on the numbers of unemployment books exchanged at the Newport and Newport Docks Employment Exchanges. For the country as a whole the numbers of insured persons in employment can be estimated by deducting the numbers unemployed from the estimated numbers insured, but in using this method for particular local areas it is necessary to bear in mind that insured persons, when unemployed may register at Employment Exchanges other than those at which their unemployment books were exchanged.
