HC Deb 24 November 1937 vol 329 c1248W
Mr. T. Smith

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air what prices have been paid for land for the air stations at Cranford, Bucks, 383 acres; at Markham, near King's Lynn, 499 acres; at Tern Hill, Shropshire, 406 acres; at Wytton, 409 acres; what was the previous rateable value of each of these areas; and what was the total area and the price of the land acquired to date for the new air stations as well as the total area yet to be obtained?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

The answer to the first part of the question is as follows:

Cranfield (not Cranford) 404 acres,£17,220;

Marham (not Markham), 499 acres,£8,505;

Ternhill, 448 acres,£33,227; and Wyton (not Wytton), 408 acres,£15,991.

As regards the second part, as the land was in the main agricultural land it was derated. As regards the last part of the question the acreage acquired to date for expansion purposes at home is 26,500 and the estimated cost£1,225,000. I regret it is not possible to say what area is still required.
