HC Deb 18 November 1937 vol 329 cc581-2W
Mr. Mander

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the French Government is founding a chair at the Hebrew University at Jerusalem, allocating funds for the purchase of books for the university library and establishing scholarships to enable teachers or students of the university to study in France, and that the Italian Government has established an Italian lectureship; and will he say what similar encouragement the British Government has given to the university, and what future plans the mandatory government have under consideration in this connection?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

I understand that the facts are as stated in the first two parts of the question. So far as I am aware, no question has arisen of similar action on the part of His Majesty's Government and no such action is in contemplation. The Palestine Government have made grants from time to time to certain departments of the university.
