HC Deb 18 March 1937 vol 321 c2273W
Mr. R. J. Taylor

asked the Minister of Health whether he has any information as to the detrimental effect caused by the wearing of spectacles sold by certain stores and by pedlars with no qualifications as opticians; and whether he proposes to take steps to prohibit such sales?

Sir K. Wood

I have no direct evidence of damage caused by the wearing of the spectacles referred to and I have no power to prohibit their sale. So far, however, as insured persons are concerned, it is proposed to make regulations to the effect that spectacles provided by way of additional benefit can be obtained only from opticians recognised by a committee to be set up under the regulations.
