§ Mr. McGovernasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether any decision has yet been taken to demolish Duke Street Prison, Glasgow; and, if so, the date when demolition will begin?
§ Mr. ElliotIt is not possible to dispose of Duke Street prison until another prison for women has been provided. A site at Greenfield Farm near Shettleston has been purchased for the new prison, but in view of the present pressure upon the building industry in Scotland, of the need for concentrating on the urgent problem of housing, and of the heavy building programme now on hand for the Prisons Department for Scotland, the construction of the new prison is being deferred for the time being.
