§ Mr. R. Gibsonasked the Minister of Labour how many persons engaged in sugar manufacturing processes have been admitted into the United Kingdom from the United States of America and elsewhere, respectively, during each of the years subsequent to 1918.
§ Mr. Butlerpursuant to his reply (OFFICIAL REPORT, 9th June, 1936; col. 1763, Vol. 324) supplied the following statement:
The number of permits issued for the employment of foreigners in beet sugar factories in the United Kingdom during each of the years 1924–37 (up to the 31st May) is shown on the statement below.
Statistics are not available for the years prior to 1924.
1982WIt is not possible to say how many of the foreigners concerned were citizens of the United States of America.
The figures include persons admitted for all types of employment in beet sugar factories, both in connection with the erection and maintenance of machinery and the operation of the various processes of manufacture involved.
Of the persons covered by these permits all, with the exception of 23, have left the country.
