HC Deb 09 July 1937 vol 326 c744W
Mr. Bull

asked the Home Secretary how many police officers in the Metropolitan area are detailed daily solely to ensure the safety of schoolchildren crossing the roads?

Sir S. Hoare

I 'am informed by the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that no police officers are solely engaged on this duty, but the number of schools at which police protection is provided is over 1,300 and, owing to the times at which the children enter and leave the schools, it is necessary to detail no less than 2,750 constables to perform this, amongst other duties, daily.

Mr. Bull

asked the Home Secretary whether any local authorities in the Metropolitan police area have provided any system of patrols at schools and busy crossings for the benefit of schoolchildren?

Sir S. Hoare

Three Local Authorities in the Metropolitan Police District are known to have appointed adult patrols to carry the "Stop—Children Crossing" sign in the immediate vicinity of schools.
