HC Deb 17 February 1937 vol 320 cc1203-4W
Sir J. Mellor

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that, under the Anglo-Spanish Clearing Agreement, it is at present impossible for British creditors to receive either sterling or pesetas in discharge of debts subject to the agreement; and whether some more satisfactory arrangement can be made?

Dr. Burgin

The position in regard to outstanding debts due from Spain to creditors in the United Kingdom was fully stated on 17th December last in reply to a question by the hon. Member for Sheffield Central. As my right hon. Friend, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, informed the House on 2nd February, this is a matter on which discussions with the Spanish Government are actively proceeding. I am not in a position, however, to make a statement.
