HC Deb 23 December 1937 vol 330 c2176W
Mr. Parker

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will give a list of the cases in which warning shots have been fired across the bows of British ships on the high seas for the purposes of conveying an order to stop by Spanish insurgent armed forces?

Viscount Cranborne

I regret that I have not such information in my possession as would enable me to give an exhaustive and accurate list.

Mr. Parker

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will state the names of the ships legally flying the British flag which have been fired at, sunk, or damaged by mine, torpedo, bomb, gun, or machine-gun fire within Spanish territorial waters by Spanish insurgents?

Viscount Cranborne

I understand that the only British ship involved in such an incident was the "Llandovery Castle," which struck a mine within territorial waters. There were also a number of British ships damaged during bombardments when in Spanish ports, but full details of these incidents are not available.
