HC Deb 23 December 1937 vol 330 cc2195-6W
Mr. Fleming

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that pseudo stamps are being sold in and around London in purported aid of the distressed areas; whether the said sale has been duly authorised; and, if not, whether proceedings will be taken against the organisers of the said sales?

Sir S. Hoare

An organisation called the "Distressed Areas Relief Society" has been arranging for the sale from house to house of stamps commemorative of the Coronation with the avowed object of raising funds in aid of the distressed areas. Under existing law no permission is required for collections for charitable purposes elsewhere than in streets and public places. From this point of view no question arises of the institution of proceedings, and it is understood that the society will be wound up by the end of the year.
