Mr. Daggar

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will state the number and names of the Special Areas in South Wales and Monmouthshire; also the number of unemployed persons and percentage of unemployment in each area, together with the percentage and number of persons unemployed in the United Kingdom?

Mr. E. Brown,

pursuant to his reply (OFFICIAL REPORT, 23rd March, 1937; cols. 2756 and 2757, Vol. 321), supplied the following statement:

The following table shows for 15th March, 1937,

  1. (a) the number of persons, aged 14 years and over, insured and uninsured, registered as unemployed, and
  2. 497
  3. (b) the percentage of unemployment among insured persons, aged 16–64, exclusive of agricultural workers, at Employment Exchanges which mainly serve the Special Areas in South Wales

Areas named in First Schedule to Special Areas (Development and Improvement) Act, 1934. Employment Exchanges which mainly serve the areas named in the first column.

For Great Britain as a whole at 15th March, 1937, there were 1,601,201 unemployed persons, insured and uninsured, aged 14 years and over on the registers of Employment Exchanges. The percentage unemployed among insured persons, aged 16–64, exclusive of agricultural workers, at the same date was 11.5.
